Papers of the Benton family, 1862-1865 and 1900-1901.

The papers contain Civil War letters, chiefly from Andrew Benton, a Union soldier, to his uncle Orin Benton in Fulton County, N.Y. Letters discuss life in Battery K, New York Independent (Havelock) Battery, New York Light Artillery, 4th Volunteer Brigade, at Ft. Ellsworth, Falmouth, and Warrenton, Va. He gives his opinions on food and health; admiration of Confederate generals and disappointment in Union generals; and Union defeats. Benton also discusses battles; the Emancipation Proclamation; preserving the Union; public opinion about the war; and his experiences as a bugler. There are similar letters from his cousin Edward James as well as a letter from Manly James regarding Edward's sickness and army hospitals, and a letter from J.E. Burnham to Sophronia Amanda Blake Benton regarding deaths from smallpox in the army. Two letters, 1900 October 26 and 1901 March 19, from David Leroy van Arnam, Leyte, Philippines, to Sophronia Benton discuss life in the occupation army, van Arnam's duties as a hospital corpsman, the production of abaca cloth, and the inhumanity of war. Typed transcripts, genealogical notes, and an obituary of van Arnam are included.
